The first of the twenty huge canvases of The Slav Epic, painted by Mucha between 1910 and 1928. After a raid a couple hides in the grass at night, looking out in fear, fires glow on the horizon and, high in the starry sky at the right, a pagan priest in white floats between figures of war and peace. The white-clad couple, the priest and the fire are the landmarks; the broad grey-blue sky is placed by its stars.
