Language of Flowers
Alphonse Mucha
Language of Flowers (c. 1900), a horizontal panel that plays on the fashion of the day for giving each flower a meaning. A woman with long brown hair reclines in a white dress with a patterned border, a small iris in her hand, while pink and yellow lilies and green stems cover the whole sheet in a dense pastel tangle. The face and white dress are the only strong landmarks; the rest is a demanding puzzle matched by the run of the stems and the colour of the blooms.
