Madonna of the Lilies
Alphonse Mucha
Madonna of the Lilies (1905), a tempera painting commissioned for a church in Jerusalem but never installed. The Virgin in white floats among a mass of white lilies, and below her sits a girl in Slavic folk costume with a wreath of flowers on her head, holding a garland of green leaves, the whole picture hushed in whites and pale blues and greens. The girl's red hair and embroidered dress are the clearest landmarks; the lilies yield many white pieces told apart by their green leaves and shadows.
