Fate (1920), painted after Mucha had returned from Paris and America to the new Czechoslovakia. A woman in a white hood drawn over her head stares straight out with dark eyes, one hand raised, the other cupping a small lamp-like object with a jewelled lid, while the blue pattern of her white robe and a swathe of deep indigo cloth set a heavy, sombre mood. The face, the two hands and the jewelled ornament are the landmarks; the broad white hood is matched by the light and shade of its folds.
