Slavia (Portrait of Josephine Crane Bradley)

Alphonse Mucha

Painted
1908
Collection
National Gallery Prague

Slavia (1908), a portrait of Josephine Crane Bradley, daughter of the Chicago patron Charles R. Crane, as the personification of the Slavs. Crowned with leaves, in a white gown trailing pink ribbons, she sits enthroned holding up a ring, a dark eagle at her feet, a golden circle and blue sky behind her and a wide border of red roses and small white flowers all round; the design later appeared on the Czechoslovak 100-koruna banknote of 1920. The flowered border and the eagle are the landmarks; the white gown is matched by where its pink ribbons fall.
