No. 17 of The Slav Epic, The Holy Mount Athos (1926). Inside an Orthodox monastery church on Mount Athos, shafts of light fall beneath a golden mosaic of the Virgin in the dome, pale haloed figures float holding models of the monasteries, and in the foreground pilgrims kneel beside candles next to a white-bearded old man leaning on a staff. The golden Virgin above and the two candlesticks are the landmarks; the misty green middle ground is matched by light and shade.
