The Apotheosis of the Slavs

Alphonse Mucha

Painted
1926

The Apotheosis of the Slavs (1926), No. 20 and the last canvas of The Slav Epic, sums up Slav history in four colour zones: blue for the past, red for the Hussite wars, black for the enemy and yellow for the free present. A golden young man spreads his arms wide at the top, a rainbow arcs at upper right with a Christ figure faintly behind, and below, crowds in white and figures holding green branches raise their arms. The young man and the rainbow are the landmarks; sorting the blurred crowds below by the four colour zones makes them manageable.
