Woman with a Hat
Henri Matisse
Matisse's wife Amélie in an enormous hat, painted in rough strokes of green, pink and orange. Even her face carries green shadows and the background breaks into patches of colour; shown at the 1905 Salon d'Automne, it helped earn the group the mocking name Fauves, wild beasts. Leo and Gertrude Stein bought it.
