The Snake Charmer

Henri Rousseau

Painted
1907
Collection
Musée d'Orsay, Paris

In a moonlit jungle by a river, a dark silhouetted woman plays a pipe and snakes slide out of the trees and grass towards her. Layers of leaves in many greens, a pink wading bird and a pale full moon give the scene its strange calm. It was commissioned by the mother of the painter Robert Delaunay; Rousseau, who never left France, studied plants at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.
