Henri Matisse
Commissioned by the Russian collector Sergei Shchukin for the staircase of his Moscow mansion, together with its companion piece Music. Five figures whirl hand in hand in a ring, painted in just three colours: blue sky, green hill and vermilion bodies. At the front two hands have not quite met, so the circle still seems to be turning.
