Fate of the Animals

Franz Marc

Painted
1913
Collection
Kunstmuseum Basel

Sharp shafts of light and red diagonals split a forest, and among them animals cry out and fall, a blue deer throwing back its head at the centre. Painted on the eve of the First World War, it seems to foresee catastrophe; Marc himself was killed at Verdun in 1916. The right-hand part, damaged in a fire, was restored by his friend Paul Klee in brownish tones.
