A maid arranges fruit on a table in a red room where wallpaper and tablecloth share one red ground and one blue arabesque pattern, so that wall and table merge. Only the window at left, with its green garden and white blossoming trees, gives the eye room to breathe. Commissioned by Shchukin, it was first painted in blue and then repainted red.
