In the flat at Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen where the couple lived, Hammershøi's wife Ida stands reading by the wall beside a window. Morning sun through the white curtains lays the pattern of the panes on the floorboards, and the stillness of the room is built from fine shifts of grey and white. Walls and floor are hard to tell apart; the window, the patch of light and the door frame at right are the landmarks.
