Christmas morning in a vaulted farmhouse room, painted in 1844 by the Austrian Biedermeier painter Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller. Children in nightshirts hold up apples and oranges, a girl at the left reaches for the sill of an open window, and a small decorated fir stands beside her. From the child at a toy table on the floor to the grandfather leaning on a chair back, every face has its own expression.
