Christmas Carols in Little Russia

Konstantin Trutovsky

Painted
1864
Collection
State Russian Museum, Saint Petersburg

Koliadky, the carol singing of a Ukrainian village on Christmas night: a group of singers crowds round the window of a whitewashed thatched house, where the mistress hands out a festive loaf. To the left, girls drag a young man in a sheepskin coat into the snow in play, a small boy in front is close to tears, and the domes of a church rise against the dark sky beyond. Trutovsky painted Ukrainian village life throughout his career.
