A Christmas evening painted by the Skagen painter Viggo Johansen in 1891: adults and children join hands and circle a candlelit tree. The candles are the only light in the dark room, catching the children's faces, pale dresses and a chequered skirt, while the edges of the room sink into brown shadow. Walking round the tree hand in hand and singing carols is a Danish Christmas Eve custom.
