The Yule Host (Julereia)
Nils Bergslien
The julereia of Norwegian folklore, a rabble of trolls, goblins, witches and drunkards that roams on Christmas night causing havoc, painted in 1922. Led by a fiddler riding a reindeer and a drummer, red-capped goblins, a fat troll and broom-wielding witches sweep across a snowy farmyard, while at the right a man tumbles head over heels beside a snowman. Bergslien was best loved for his pictures of the nisse, the Norwegian farm sprite.
