Private collection

A tiny oil on board painted in 1845 by the Viennese artist Ranftl, nicknamed the 'Raphael of dogs' for his animal pictures. A boy in a fur-trimmed cap and a girl in a red hood huddle together behind a Christmas market stall set with little figures, while a shaggy dog looks up at their feet. Behind them a fir tree hung with small flags rises from the darkness.
