Christmas Market Am Hof in Vienna

Ernst Juch

Painted

after 1883

Collection

Belvedere, Vienna

A panel no bigger than a hand, in which Ernst Juch, who also worked as a caricaturist, captured the Christmas market Am Hof in Vienna; a building on the square finished in 1883 dates it after that year. A crowd fills the snowy square – people with dogs, a child in red, a man with a bundle – beneath poles hung with red decorations. Quick brushwork catches the bustle of the market.
