The Holy Night
Correggio
Painted around 1528–30 for a chapel in the church of San Prospero in Reggio Emilia, and known simply as La Notte. The light comes from the Christ Child himself, so the Virgin’s face glows, a shepherdess at left raises her hand against the glare, and angels tumble down on a cloud above. The painting entered the collection of the Elector of Saxony in the 18th century and has been in Dresden ever since.
