The Adoration of the Shepherds
Gerard van Honthorst
Painted in 1622 by the Utrecht artist who had absorbed Caravaggio’s contrasts of light in Rome, and whose night scenes earned him the Italian nickname Gherardo delle Notti. The light comes from the Christ Child in the manger, falling on the Virgin as she lifts the cloth, on the shepherds crowding round, and on Joseph and the ox at right. The dark edges have little variation, so work outwards from the bright centre.
