Bruegel moved the census of Luke's Gospel into a snowbound Flemish village in 1566. People crowd to register and pay their dues outside an inn hung with a green wreath at lower left, while in the lower middle Joseph, a saw over his shoulder, leads Mary in blue on a donkey almost unnoticed through the throng. Children playing on the ice, a pig being slaughtered and dozens more small scenes make the village a pleasure to piece together.
