The Adoration of the Shepherds (Allendale Nativity)
Giorgione
Also called the Allendale Nativity after a former owner, Viscount Allendale, this picture of about 1505–10 is generally given to Giorgione, though some have seen the hand of the young Titian. Before a rocky cave at right, Mary and Joseph kneel over the Christ Child as two shepherds come to adore him, while at left a Venetian landscape of trees, river, village and distant blue hills opens out.
