The Mystic Nativity
Sandro Botticelli
Botticelli's Nativity of 1500, the only work he signed and dated. Beneath the roof of a stable the Virgin adores the Christ Child, with the Magi at left and shepherds at right led by angels; above, twelve angels holding olive branches dance in a golden ring, and at the bottom angels embrace men while small devils flee into cracks in the ground. The Greek inscription at the top refers to the troubles of Italy and the Book of Revelation.
