A Christmas card by Jenny Nyström from about 1899, showing tomtar, the household gnomes of Swedish folklore, getting the Christmas parcels ready. In a moonlit barn one bespectacled tomte writes on a package propped on a barrel while two others load white bundles sealed with red wax onto a sledge, lanterns glowing beside them. Nyström did more than anyone to fix the image of the red-capped, white-bearded Swedish jultomte.
