Christmas Delivery, painted by the French artist José Frappa around 1894–95. A naked winged cherub pedals a bicycle hung with toys and parcels across the starry night sky, trailing a comet-like beam of light as he sweeps over a snowbound mountain village. The bicycle was the craze of 1890s France, and here it takes the place of Santa’s sleigh.
