Merry Old Santa Claus
Thomas Nast
Thomas Nast's wood engraving from the 1 January 1881 issue of Harper's Weekly, often credited with fixing the modern image of Santa Claus. Wearing a fur cap topped with holly and puffing a long pipe, Santa clutches an armful of presents: a baby doll, a toy sword, a pocket watch and a picture book. Nast had been drawing Santa for the magazine since 1863, and this jolly, white-bearded figure became the best known of them.
