Santa Claus and His Works

Thomas Nast

Painted
c. 1869
Collection
New-York Historical Society

The cover of Santa Claus and His Works, a picture book published around 1869 by McLoughlin Brothers of New York, pairing George P. Webster’s verses with Nast’s drawings. Santa, in spectacles, sits cross-legged on the floor with his needle raised, sewing a doll’s dress, among ranks of toy soldiers, a rabbit, a doll’s house, a pincushion and scissors. The patterned border in bright colours makes a good starting point for the puzzle.
