Harper's Weekly: Christmas 1894
Edward Penfield
Penfield, art director at Harper’s in the 1890s and a leader of the American poster craze, designed this image for the 1894 Christmas number of Harper’s Weekly. Santa in an orange robe steps out of a forest with an armful of fir branches, and the big lettering above and below locks together with the grey boughs in flat areas of colour. With only orange, grey and black, the lettering is the easiest place to begin.
