The Lacemaker

Johannes Vermeer

Painted
c. 1669–70
Collection
Musée du Louvre, Paris

A young woman bent over her bobbins and pins, absorbed in making lace, in one of Vermeer's smallest paintings, only about 24 by 21 centimetres. Her gaze is fixed on her fingertips, while red and white threads spill from the sewing cushion in front, painted so loosely that the paint itself seems to flow. The foreground is soft and only her hands are in sharp focus, so the viewer's eye is drawn to them too.
