A young woman in a blue jacket stands in the middle of a room, holding a letter in both hands as she reads. A large map hangs from rods on the wall behind her, and although no window is shown, light from the left falls on her face and the pale wall. The blue of the jacket is the costly ultramarine Vermeer favoured; the blue figure, the map and the brass-studded chairs are the places to start.
