The Archangel Gabriel kneels on a flowering lawn with a lily in his hand to announce the coming birth of Christ to Mary, seated at a carved marble lectern. Leonardo painted it at about twenty, while still in Verrocchio's workshop in Florence, and behind the dark cypresses a misty harbour and mountains fade into blue. On this wide panel, the lectern, the corner of the house and the tree silhouettes are the easiest places to start.
