Girl with the Red Hat

Johannes Vermeer

Painted
c. 1669
Collection
National Gallery of Art, Washington

A girl in a broad red feathered hat turns from her chair to look straight out at us, lips parted. Light gathers in soft droplets on her lips, her earring and the carved lion-head finials of the chair, while the sheen of her blue wrap meets the red of the hat against a dark tapestry. It is painted on a wooden panel only 22.8 cm high, unusual for Vermeer, who almost always worked on canvas.
