Adele Bloch-Bauer, wife of the Viennese industrialist Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, in Klimt's second portrait of her, painted in 1912. Unlike the gold-leaf first portrait, this one is built from flat fields of colour: a broad black hat, a white dress and patterned stole, a green ground scattered with flowers and a red band of East Asian-style figures above. Seized by the Nazis, it was returned to her heirs in 2006 and is now privately owned.
