The Tree of Life (Cartoon for the Stoclet Frieze)
Gustav Klimt
The central section of the Tree of Life from the working cartoons Klimt made in 1910–11 for the mosaic frieze in the dining room of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. Spiral branches coil endlessly across a golden ground, eye-shaped motifs stud the trunk, and a black bird perches on a branch at the right. The repeating spirals make it a hard puzzle; the black bird and the strip of flowers at the bottom are the places to start.
