A woman at a table by a window lifts a small balance between her fingertips, waiting for it to settle. Pearls and gold lie on the table, yet the pans of the balance are empty, and behind her hangs a painting of the Last Judgement, so the scene is often read as a weighing of earthly riches against the soul. Light from the window behind the yellow curtain falls on her face and the white fur trim of her jacket.
