The Astronomer

Johannes Vermeer

Painted
1668
Collection
Musée du Louvre, Paris

A scholar at a desk by the window reaches out to a celestial globe, studying the constellations; the date 1668 is inscribed in the picture. An open book and a patterned cloth lie on the table, and a painting of the Finding of Moses hangs on the wall. It is thought to be a companion to The Geographer, with the same model and room; these are the only two paintings by Vermeer of a man alone.
