Norham Castle, Sunrise

J. M. W. Turner

Painted
c. 1845
Collection
Tate Britain, London

Norham Castle, on the River Tweed at the English–Scottish border, dissolves into a blue silhouette in the morning sun in this late painting. Turner had painted the castle many times; this canvas was never exhibited in his lifetime and came to the nation with the Turner Bequest. Apart from the yellow sun and a red cow drinking in the river there are almost no firm shapes, so the puzzle means reading slight shifts of colour.
