Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds
John Constable
The spire of Salisbury Cathedral rises between the trees of the bishop's garden, while cows drink from the stream in front. Constable painted the first version in 1823 for his patron and friend Bishop John Fisher; the bishop took exception to the dark cloud over the cathedral, and in this second version the sky is clear and bright and the trees are thinned so that they no longer arch over the spire.
