The Sea of Ice
Caspar David Friedrich
Shattered slabs of ice pile up into a jagged tower in a polar sea, and among the floes at right the stern of a crushed ship is sinking from view. The picture drew on the Arctic voyages then in the news and on oil sketches Friedrich made of ice floes on the Elbe, and it found no buyer in his lifetime. Sky and ice share the same pale grey-blue, so the puzzle is hard: the edges and shadow lines of the slabs are the best guides.
