Two Men Contemplating the Moon
Caspar David Friedrich
Two men, seen from behind on a woodland path at dusk, stand together, one resting a hand on the other's shoulder, and look at a crescent moon. Friedrich first painted the composition around 1819 (the version now in Dresden); this is a replica he made some years later. The branches of a half-uprooted oak spread like a net across the sky, and the evening glow of pink and gold lights the centre of the picture.
