The Monk by the Sea
Caspar David Friedrich
A tiny monk stands alone on a pale dune before a dark sea and an immense, empty sky. Shown at the Berlin Academy exhibition of 1810 beside its companion, The Abbey in the Oakwood, it was bought together with that picture by the Prussian royal family. Most of the canvas is sky shading from deep blue-grey to pale blue, which makes it a hard puzzle; the horizon and the edge of the dune are the surest guides.
