The Card Players
Paul Cézanne
Two peasants face each other across a small table, absorbed in their cards without a word. Cézanne painted five card-playing scenes with farmworkers from around his native Aix-en-Provence as models, and this version in the Musée d'Orsay is generally thought to be the last. The bottle in the middle divides the picture in two, and the dark coat of the man on the left is balanced by the pale yellow jacket of the man on the right.
