Hoarfrost, Peasant Girl Making a Fire

Camille Pissarro

Painted
1888
Collection
Museum Barberini, Potsdam

Painted in 1888, when Pissarro had taken up Seurat's dot technique, this shows peasant children making a brushwood fire in a frosty field on a winter morning. A girl in a white headscarf stirs the fire with a long stick while a boy warms his hands by the billowing smoke, and cows graze on the frosted meadow behind. Looted by the Nazis and restituted to its owner's heirs in 2018, it is now in the Museum Barberini, Potsdam.
