Snow Scene at Argenteuil
Claude Monet
In the winter of 1874–75 snow covered Argenteuil, the town north-west of Paris where Monet lived, and this is the largest of at least eighteen snow scenes he painted there. Figures make their way along the Boulevard Saint-Denis, which leads away from the station, while frosted trees and a distant church spire dissolve into the pale air. The thick paint on the road in the foreground suggests the weight of deep snow.
