Rooftops in the Snow (Snow Effect)

Gustave Caillebotte

Painted

1878

Collection

Musée d'Orsay, Paris

Paris rooftops under snow in 1878, seen from a high window. Grey roofs, chimney stacks and dormer windows carry their white loads one behind another beneath a leaden sky, and the long diagonal of the roofline in the foreground pulls the eye into depth. Caillebotte's brother Martial gave the painting to the French state in 1894, the year of the artist's death; it is now in the Musée d'Orsay.
