Snow at Vaugirard

Paul Gauguin

Painted
1879
Collection
Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest

A snow-covered garden in Vaugirard, the district in south-west Paris where Gauguin then lived; the picture is also known as Garden under Snow. Thin bare trees divide the canvas into vertical strips, and behind them roofs and walls dissolve into white snow and pale violet shadow. At the time Gauguin was a stockbroker who painted on Sundays under the guidance of Camille Pissarro.
