Maslenitsa, the Russian festival week before Lent with its sleigh rides and pancakes, painted by Kustodiev in 1916. A red sleigh drawn by galloping horses races down a snowy slope, and beyond lie a small town of domed churches, a sky flushed pink and green and a wheeling flock of crows. By then an operation had left Kustodiev's legs paralysed, yet from his wheelchair he went on painting festive scenes as bright as this one.
