La Japonaise (Camille Monet in Japanese Costume)
Claude Monet
Monet's life-size portrait of his wife Camille in a red kimono, shown at the second Impressionist exhibition in 1876. Wearing a blonde wig, she turns with a fan in the French tricolour, while a samurai about to draw his sword is embroidered on the kimono and Japanese fans are scattered across the wall and floor. The picture reflects the craze for things Japanese that was sweeping Paris at the time.
