Pink Peach Trees (Souvenir de Mauve)

Vincent van Gogh

Painted

1888

Collection

Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo

A peach tree in full pink blossom, painted at Arles in the spring of 1888. While working on it van Gogh heard that Anton Mauve, the painter and relative by marriage who had taught him in The Hague, had died, so he inscribed it Souvenir de Mauve at lower left and sent it to Mauve's widow. Pale yellow ground, a reed fence on the right and a sky of white clouds make up the bright spring light around the tree.
